Defect Leakage is bad!!

Defect Leakage is a software test measurement where the number of defects found in by the customer (User Acceptance Testing) or in production are compared with the number of defects found before this stage.

Mathematically the formula can be expressed as :

Number of defects found in production or UAT /Number of Defects found in testing. Clearly the higher the defect leakage percentage the lower is the software quality of the product. Many organizations target a defect leakage percentage between 2 and 10 percent.

Shift Left is way better!

It's a well-known fact in the software industry that the cost of a defect increases disproportionately based on the stage in development that a defect is discovered.

And with an agile DevOps process releasing rapidly features into production if not managed well can result in a significant and dramatic drop in software quality.

Shifting left your defect discovery means finding more defects earlier in the process. That is finding a larger number of defects in development and integration as opposed to in staging or in production. The advantages are :

  1. The cost of repairing a defect is lower the earlier it is discovered
  2. A massive spike of defects found in Staging or System test just prior to release is avoided

TMRW - Life Sciences Seed to Series C startup

TMRW has created a revolutionary platform for in-vitro fertilization with the first automated and robotic cryo-management platform devoted to IVF. The company sets a new benchmark in IVF care and delivers a core technology that will be instrumental in the birth of tens of millions of children worldwide.

When Webomates started working with TMRW they were very early in creating their groundbreaking product. Using Webomates CQ they were able to :

  1. Add test cases and automation scripts on the fly as they with controlled startup madness scaled up their scripts
  2. Have always up-to-date automation
  3. Shift left their testing so that it was carried on staging, integration, and even in development

Defects discovery shifting left over a period of 100 days

As a result they were able to through their development teams hard work introduce features rapidly into their product while using Webomates CQ as a safety net to ensure that they met the extremely high quality standards for FDA compliance while developing at a mad agile speed!
